I took this picture of him in 1995, shortly after I first met him. Jimmy often spoke to young aboriginal youth to help give them guidance and to help establish a good path for them for their future. Jimmy starred in movies such as Dances with Wolves and TV shows like North of 60, which ran for 6 seasons and dawned a few movies out of it here in Canada. Jimmy passed away over 10 years ago, and when i recently found my photos of him, I wanted to revisit him through my art. He posed for me wearing his buckskin jacket which dawn the beaded floral pattern which symbolizes his Cree and Dene heritage. 18” X 18”’ Charcoal and white pastel on light blue canson paper. The idea was in my mind for about three or four years, but i wasn’t sure how to compose it, as i wanted a letter to be prominent in the foreground with some of the song lyrics on it to give context to the painting. Then last year I was asked to do a presentation on still life, and it became the kickstarter for the painting as I was able to focus on the still life genre, and it just seemed to evolve. The letter says “I was five and he was six, we rode on horses made of sticks. He wore black and I wore white.. he would always win the fight”…. The gun on the table is hers and is in the old photo- she is wearing it in the holster. He has one too, it is in his hand that’s around her and is pointed at the viewer; and the horse made of sticks is in the background. The song goes on to say that they were married, but he left her; “he didn't even take the time to lie”, he just left. The glass of whiskey and the cigarette butts indicate the anguish she is now going through, and the bullet is for a .44 magnum. Is she going to use it? Being forced into a Mexican ‘Purrsion’ for a few lonely months when her owner surrendered her as she could no longer look after her, I met Cleo and she came with me all the way up north to Canada in 2018, where she spent the remaining time of her life catching mice and getting treats and catnip. Cleo was the mascot and main greeter of the studio, but she said goodbye to us July 10, 2023. She is greatly missed by all, especially her sister Henri, who now has the full responsibility of the greeting task. Cleo taught her how to hunt mice, although Henri prefers the catch and release program where she can play with them and then let them go, to play another day. Henri loved car rides with her sister, although the backseat wasn’t always where she wanted to be and would occasionally have a hissing-fit if her sister was up in the front without her.
