Students from Midlake Art Studio have won numerous awards at the Calgary Stampede and Exposition, taking home Best of Show, 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in each category every year that they have entered.

Whatever each student chooses to paint, Tracy urges them to find their passion and voice to bring out the beauty and story with each work of art.

Family Artifacts

Judy’s painting of some of her parents things. It was really neat to see an authentic beaver hat- the beaver pelt was widely sought after in the 1800’s, and was imported across parts of Europe from Canada. The gloves, pearls, books and opera glasses speak of the fine life, and then there’s the opium pipe and case! A real gem of a painting!

Here comes the Bride!

Theresa’s niece, who lives in Australia, had some of her wedding photos featured in a magazine. She asked Theresa to paint this picture, its 4 feet tall, and absolutely stunning to see in person! I was so honoured to watch it being painted, as now it lives in Australia!

Wine and cheese

This painting is very intricate- the bottles come from a winery in British Columbia. The son of the couple who owns the winery is an artist who creates the labels on the bottles. When you visit the winery, you can put on 3D glasses to see the walls and all of the artwork. he has won awards for the labels, and Bahar painstakenly recreated the bottles with precision and accuracy. The painting is breathtaking.

Doll sketch

It is such a privilege to watch the students in their endeavours. This is a drawing that Val did. She captured the clown in such a beautiful way, all from life. she set the doll up, and then let it flop into position before beginning the drawing. such a unique pose with its benevolent look!!
